Spanish Language Courses and Tutoring

Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world and is important for everyday communication across three continents. At BLI we offer a range of Spanish classes and workshops that focus on conversation and travel, business communication, medical terminology and sports. We are currently expanding our program to also engage youth in Spanish speaking activities for an early start to language acquisition.

Introductory Spanish I 

Introductory Spanish I is designed for students who have never taken a Spanish class before. At the end of the course you will reach basic proficiency in writing, reading, speaking and listening in Spanish. You will be familiar with a variety of topics, such as your family and friends, your likes/dislikes, food and hobbies and your daily routine. You will also be able to give directions, order in a restaurant, read menus and brochures and talk about the time.

This course is designed for you to finish your day by learning something new in a comfortable and fun environment.

Sessions — Winter 2020

Introductory Spanish I will meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 4:30-5:30pm from January 14th – March 5th at our central location. The course will be capped at the first 10 students to register, so please register at least one week in advance. Accelerated Introductory Spanish – NEW!

Accelerated Introductory Spanish is an accelerated introductory course for speakers of French, Italian or Portuguese, or for students who have studied some Spanish in the past and need a refresher course. In this course we will cover the equivalent of introductory levels I and most of Spanish II within the 8-week period.

You will learn about a variety of topics, such as your family, your likes/dislikes, food and hobbies and your daily routine. You will also be able to give directions, order in a restaurant, read menus, talk about past experiences and future plans.

Accelerated Introductory Spanish will meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 5:45-6:45pm, January 14th — March 5th. Introductory Spanish II

Spanish II is designed for students who have taken a Spanish class before and want to refresh their knowledge, learn more and keep practicing or simply pick up where they left off. At the end of the course you will reach advanced proficiency in writing, reading, speaking and listening in Spanish. Vocabulary, long sentences, past, present and future tenses is the main focus of this 8 week course.

Sessions – Winter 2020

Spanish II will meet every Monday and Wednesday morning from 11am-12pm from January 13th – March 4th at our central location. The course will be capped at the first 10 students to register, so please register at least one week in advance. Spanish for Kids

Starting in January, we will hold after school Spanish immersion classes. Spanish for Kids is designed to provide a fun and immersive Spanish language learning opportunity for youth in grades 3, 4, and 5. We will play games, learn songs, dance, read stories, and craft while using the Spanish language. The after school immersion program is limited to 10 students, so please sign up in advance.

Winter Session 1

Spanish for Kids will begin Monday through Friday beginning January 13th from 3pm-4pm and will continue for 5 weeks. We will also offer a Winter Session 2 class that will begin February 18th, so kids can sign up for back-to-back sessions.

You can sign up your child to attend any day of the week, or multiple days of the week! When registering for the program through the website, please be sure to specify which days you would like your child to attend the program when you checkout.

Saskia will teach Tuesday and Thursday classes. Monica will teach Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes. Both of them will work together to design the curriculum so you can sign up for any combination of days.

Early registration cost: $60 for the 5 week session ($12 per class). Early registration deadline is December 6th.

Regular registration cost: $75 ($15 per class). Regular registration deadline is January 8th.

Yoga en Español

Yoga? Yes! Spanish student or speaker? Yes! This workshop is for you. There is no better way to learn a language than by putting it into action! This Yoga series is taught by a certified Yoga teacher and will enable you to finish your day with a practice for your mind and body by reinforcing your Spanish language skills. This class will be a Vinyasa flow for all levels inviting Yoga-skeptics, short-term and long-term Yogis. The class will be a fun mix of strengthening, stretching and breathing with options to cater different levels of students. Let’s move our body through the Spanish language!

This class is a four-week series and will meet on Wednesdays from 5:45 – 6:45 pm from October 23rd to November 13th. Cost per class is $15. You can email bendlanguageinstitute.comif you have questions.

Wines of Spain – A Cultural Landscape

Join us for a geographic and cultural journey as we learn how wine enriches the lifestyle of Spaniards and how the culture of wine varies from region to region throughout the Iberian Peninsula. We will discover the languages surrounding Spain’s exceptional wines.  This workshop is led by long time OSU and COCC Spanish Professor David Engel who leads groups to Spain each year so they can experience the historical and culinary delights found there.

We will meet from 4-6pm on Saturday, January 25th at 416 NE Greenwood Ave. Cost: $25

Learn one-on-one through private language lessons. Cost is $43, the best rate in town! Purchase as many hours as you wish to use and we’ll get in touch to schedule you. I am a native German from Cologne who just relocated to Bend with my husband who I love to travel with. I am a certified Spanish and ESL teacher with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education which I obtained from the University of Cologne, Germany. My interest in cultural exchange and teaching led me to living in different parts of the world, such as Argentina, Australia, Spain, Mexico and throughout the United States, where I have gained extensive experience in different educational and multilingual settings.

I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Spanish was the language I spoke at home with my family, and later became an important language for my career. Since moving to Bend, I have found a new and exciting career path as a medical interpreter and language teacher. When I am not at Bend Languages Institute, I am teaching Spanish in local middle schools and through the COCC continuing education program. I also enjoy teach courses in nonverbal communications at a local studio. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, baking, and kayaking with my husband in our beautiful lakes around Central Oregon.

I grew up in Chile and I am a Spanish and German teacher. I have had the fortune to study and teach abroad in Germany, New Zealand and now in the United States. Working with many different cultures has taught me to reach students in an affective and compassionate manner. I love to see my students having fun learning and I like that they feel comfortable in the classroom We do a lot of different activities always in a context and we practice the four skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in the language. When you learn a new language you learn another culture too and that helps you to see life from another perspective!
