France is home to the largest population of Maghrebin and African immigrants in Western Europe. In this course we will examine the status of and issues pertaining to first and second-generation Maghrebis & Africans living in France. Our readings and discussions will be held in French making this an ideal course for advanced French speakers.
Among the themes covered are:
- Inter-relations between French-born Maghrebis/Africans and the broader French society (including other immigrant groups living in France)
- Issues of identity and cultural preservation among Maghrebi/African immigrants
- Maghrebis and Africans in the French job market: issues of opportunity, unemployment and workplace discrimination
- The role of arts and popular culture in preserving and reshaping Maghrebi and African identity in France
Guest speakers, video clips, contemporary media and other relevant primary and secondary sources will offer authentic perspectives on the Maghrebin/African communities.
